Architects design for the human experience. When an architectural space is filled with live performance, the artistry of the experience is palpable. Musicians and dancers are regularly adapting—from moment to moment—to their space. Sound waves are adjusted for, sight lines considered, obstacles choreographed around. In this series, we will study how the nature of space affects the experience of the artists and the audience.
This year’s Space & Sound programs will include Colburn artists performing live in remarkable architectural spaces, joined by industry experts and special guests in a lively and educational conversation with attendees.
Contemporary Residence, Malibu (Location details will be sent to ticket holders)
Nestled directly on the beach off Pacific Coast Highway, this modern masterpiece was designed as a serene home away from home for an LA family, seamlessly blending the tranquility of the ocean with the artistry of contemporary design. With clean lines and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the space invites breathtaking ocean views and spectacular sunsets, while the striking geometric skylights add a touch of modern elegance. Enjoy gazing at the ocean, marveling at the architectural details, conversing with the architect, Ed Niles, and reveling in the performances by talented Colburn musicians, each piece thoughtfully curated to complement the stunning surroundings.
Edward R. Niles, FAIA started his architectural firm in 1967 and is responsible for many architecturally significant Los Angeles homes with a focus on the Malibu area. His expertise lies in contemporary structures using a variety of materials, contrasting angles, and natural light.
