With Mykael and Yulia Ayrapetyan, piano. The concert program will reveal the legacy of one of the greatest Armenian composers – Aram Khachaturian.

In this evening of manic melodies, the frenzied energy felt in Shostakovich’s first cello concerto is paired with the dark and turbulent power of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. The program also features a contemporary piece by Elizabeth Ogonek as part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, a two-week state-wide music initiative showcasing the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years.

Violinist Jennifer Koh leads an in-depth master class with Colburn students, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic, creative, and learning processes. Recognized for intense, commanding performances delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance, violinist Jennifer Koh is a forward-thinking artist dedicated to exploring a broad and eclectic repertoire, while promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music. 

The phrase “army of generals” was used by the eighteenth-century author Charles Burney to describe the splendid court orchestra at Mannheim, Germany, an orchestra coveted by Mozart. The Baroque Ensemble will perform galant orchestral music that was originally performed (or might have been performed) by this famous ensemble. The program will include music by Stamitz and Richter, and will conclude with Haydn’s beloved ‘Farewell’ Symphony. This performance will be livestreamed.

The absolutely inimitable clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester will be joined by Camerata Pacifica’s beloved Armenian cellist Ani Aznavoorian and exceptional Estonian pianist Irina Zahharenkova in a program of Australian clarinet music, Argentinian cello music and the iconic Clarinet Trio of the Viennese titan, Johannes Brahms.

This Fall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Frank Gehry-designed home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, celebrates its 20th anniversary. That project, with others presented during this event, was a catalyst in reshaping the city’s artistic scene since the turn of this century. This Record on the Road in Los Angeles will look at the economic, social, and cultural impact of arts buildings on various neighborhoods.

Including two compositions recently commissioned for the California Festival, Hear Now presents a program of compositions by eight Los Angeles composers. The pieces will be performed by the three Hear Now resident ensembles–the Lyris Quartet, Brightwork new music, and the Hex Vocal Ensemble–as well as other outstanding Los Angeles musicians.

Talented ensembles from the Conservatory of Music present programs of beloved chamber works. 

Led by Maxim Eshkenazy, the Community School chamber orchestra performs Mozart’s “Serenata notturna” and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht.

Emmy Award winner Kris Bowers has scored some of the most popular films and television series this decade, including the Netflix hit Bridgerton and the Academy Award-winning films King Richard and Green Book. He presents a program of his own compositions including chamber arrangements of his famous scores. This performance will be livestreamed.

Led by Maxim Eshkenazy, the Community School sinfonietta performs Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Violins, with faculty soloists Moni Simeonov and Henry Gronnier.

Pianist Jae-Hyuck Cho leads an in-depth master class with Colburn students, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic, creative, and learning processes. Acclaimed pianist and organist Jae-Hyuck Cho is one of the most active concert artists in South Korea. He has been described as “a musician who is nearing perfection with extraordinary breadth of expression, flawless technique and composition, sensitivity and intelligence, insightful and detailed playing without exaggeration.”

Experience the talent and creativity of Colburn’s distinguished faculty artists as they perform their own curated programs with friends and students.  Enjoy a rare solo recital by Van Cliburn-winning pianist Fabio Bidini featuring works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. This event is nearing capacity. However, there are always no-shows for free events, and we have never had to turn away a patron. Patrons without tickets will be invited to join the standby line and allowed into the hall 5 minutes before the master class, if space is available.
