This intimate concert of Baroque and Classical favorites centers around a charming and operatic double concerto for flute. Rounding out the program are selections from Handel’s regal Water Music and Mozart’s solemn 40th Symphony, one of only two he wrote in a minor key. This performance will be livestreamed.

Led by Maxim Eshkenazy, the Community School sinfonietta presents a rich program of varied work.

Pianist Genevieve Feiwen Lee will present “La Voix du Pianiste” or Voice of the Pianist, a program that features speaking and singing with keyboards. Works will include world premieres by Chris Castro and Livia Malossi Bottignole, plus Gao Ping’s Daydreams, and Kurt Rohde’s Famous Last Words for speaking keyboard player and assorted items.

Camerata Pacifica’s next program features Brahms’ mighty Piano Quintet and the intensely romantic string sextet by Schoenberg, Verklärte Nacht. Arvo Pärt’s minimal meditation, Spiegel im Spiegel, will serve as a mind-refreshing interlude between the two giants. Dedicated to emigre, composer, and long-time Los Angeles resident Walter Arlen, this program features premieres of works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Walter Arlen, who both fled fascism and artistic repression in Europe and made their home in Los Angeles. A pre-concert talk at 5:30 pm will focus on the life-defining challenges exiled artists faced in the 1930s and 40s and what must be done today to keep their work alive. Young performers in the Community School of Performing Arts and the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute join forces for this favorite annual event, which highlights original works by Colburn faculty members. The evening features a world premiere for orchestra, chorus, and modern dancers: Michaela Eremiasova’s Dance of Souls with choreography by Tamsin Carlson, commissioned for the 2024 Collaboration Concert in honor of Adrian Daly. Also featuring original music by Adrian Dunn, original choreography by Sarah Swenson, and world premiere choreography by Denise Scheerer.

LA Phil Principal Horn Andrew Bain is joined by Colburn faculty members Martin Beaver, violin, and Fabio Bidini, piano, for a program that includes Brahms’s Horn Trio. This event is nearing capacity. However, there are always no-shows for free events. Patrons without tickets will be invited to join the standby line and allowed into the hall 5 minutes before curtain, if space is available.

Music Academy and Dance Academy students perform celebrated choreography paired with musical masterworks. This year’s program features beautiful Balanchine choreography danced to music by Glinka and Hindemith; an encore performance of Janie Taylor’s enchanting Contour and Flight featuring an original score by David K. Israel performed live; and the world premiere of Trú, choreographed by LINES Ballet dancer and Colburn Amplify Artist Michael Montgomery. This performance will be livestreamed.

The 28^th International Liana & Ruben Cohen Music Competition was set up in memoriam of Colburn alumni Liana & her brother Ruben Cohen, piano & violin.  The Cohen family’s purpose for the competition and concert is to encourage youth to study classical music. On March 24, in honor of Liana’s birthday, the competition winners will perform and receive awards in this concert in Zipper Hall.

In a program of grandeur fitting for Walt Disney Concert Hall, two monumental 20th century works take centerstage: Prokofiev’s powerful second piano concerto and Shostakovich’s crowd-pleasing fifth symphony. A fast-paced work by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colburn’s Maestro Ernst H. Katz Chair of Conducting Studies, opens the concert. 

Salonen Conducting Fellow Elias Peter Brown conducts and curates a program centered around climate grief and solastalgia, the sense of loss felt in the face of changing ecological conditions.

Colburn Conservatory student Anya Galipoli and Alumna Alyssa Katahara will perform a program of contemporary works for harp, including a world premiere piece by Gilad Cohen, specially commissioned for the duo. Composer, performer, and theorist Cohen will also take part in a pre-concert talk from 7 pm.
