Leading guest artists from San Francisco Ballet (SFB) collaborate with the Colburn Conservatory in a performance and discussion illuminating the creative process. The centerpiece of the program is the duet from Benjamin Millepied’s Appassionata, which is set to a Beethoven piece of the same name. Following a performance of the work, faculty member and dance historian Jill Nunes Jensen will moderate a conversation with the dancers and pianist about the choreography and music, the process of preparing the piece, and the experience of working and performing together.

The Colburn Baroque Ensemble is joined by renowned seismologist, baroque musician, and composer Dr. Lucy Jones for an innovative program centered around the climate crisis. Performed against a backdrop of climate-focused art and media, the music of Rebel, Purcell, Gabrieli, Telemann, and more is paired with narration by Dr. Jones to paint a picture of the current crisis and the actions we can take to minimize it. Spielfreude”, the joy of playing, describes the sheer physical and emotive pleasure of performing at the keyboard. Mark Robson’s recital offers a program that largely takes its cue from this idea, with pieces from a range of composers including Ligeti, Glass, Cowell, Messiaen, Aldo Clementi and Ginastera, with premieres by Peter Knell, Hannah Rice and Daniel Rothman. Also featured will be Schoenberg’s Zwei Klavierstücke, Op. 33 in honor of the composer’s 150th birth anniversary, and a concert etude by Robson himself.
