The Colburn Orchestra joins forces with the Los Angeles Master Chorale for a breathtaking performance of Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony led by Earl Lee in his LA debut. Bold and passionate, Symphony No. 2 explores the concepts of life and death using a large orchestra, organ, choir, church bells, offstage brass ensemble, and more.

Award-winning, 22-year-old pianist and composer Talon Smith will perform his newly published masterpiece, “Sonata in C minor, Op. 2” for solo piano, showcasing his unique voice, mastery of the piano, and ability to evoke emotion through music. Talon will also perform two of Chopin’s greatest masterworks—Polonaise-Fantaisie and Ballade in F minor. He will then take us on a vivid musical journey through Mussorgsky’s epic magnum opus, Pictures at an Exhibition.

WEINBERG Concertino for Violin and String Orchestra WEINBERG Flute Concerto No. 1 WEINBERG Chamber Symphony No. 1
Despite being a friend and contemporary of Shostakovich, the musical genius of Mieczysław Weinberg went unrecognized for much of the 20th century due to Soviet-Era suppression. This concert highlights three of Weinberg’s more than 150 works: a playful flute concerto, a concertino for violin and string orchestra, and a dramatic chamber symphony. The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices is made possible through the generous support of Marilyn Ziering alongside the many donors who are inspired by this incredibly important work at Colburn School.
Under the batons of Salonen Fellows Mert Yalniz and Aleksandra Melaniuk, soloists from the Conservatory perform concerto movements with the Colburn Orchestra.

This afternoon of playful pieces begins with Gershwin’s An American in Paris, which paints a vivid picture of life in the French capital—bustling streets, car horns, and all. The musical fireworks continue in a jazz-influenced piano concerto by Ravel before the lively spirit and dance-like melodies of Dvořák’s Eight Symphony close out the program.
