Colburn Orchestra: Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto

Two works on this program, both critically panned at their premieres, have since become audience favorites. Shostakovich’s Sixth starts with an achingly emotional slow movement before plunging toward a fast and fiery finish. In Tchaikovsky's lively Violin Concerto, the virtuosic demands made on the soloist never fail to leave audiences awestruck. The David Hockney-inspired opening work is performed in memory of composer, pianist, and former Colburn faculty member Sarah Gibson.

Viola Plus founder and director Tatjana Masurenko brings her acclaimed concert series to Los Angeles for the first time. The Adrian Dunn Singers, a professional all-Black vocal ensemble, return for another joyous musical celebration of Black History Month. Joined by the Rize Orchestra, the ensemble will record live Resurrection, a new album by Adrian Dunn, Colburn’s Director of Choral Programs. Divided into four powerful acts, the evening will feature the world premiere of Adrian Dunn’s Mass; Salvation, a song cycle inspired by bell hooks; ZEEK, a revolutionary new opera suite, and a celebratory finale of jazz and gospel works. Award-winning, 22-year-old pianist and composer Talon Smith will perform his newly published masterpiece, “Sonata in C minor, Op. 2” for solo piano, showcasing his unique voice, mastery of the piano, and ability to evoke emotion through music. Talon will also perform two of Chopin’s greatest masterworks—Polonaise-Fantaisie and Ballade in F minor. He will then take us on a vivid musical journey through Mussorgsky’s epic magnum opus, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Despite being a friend and contemporary of Shostakovich, the musical genius of Mieczysław Weinberg went unrecognized for much of the 20th century due to Soviet-Era suppression. This concert highlights three of Weinberg’s more than 150 works: a playful flute concerto, a concertino for violin and string orchestra, and a dramatic chamber symphony. The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices is made possible through the generous support of Marilyn Ziering alongside the many donors who are inspired by this incredibly important work at Colburn School.
