Violist Jonathan Brown, Colburn’s newly appointed professor of chamber music, was a member of the acclaimed Cuarteto Casals for more than two decades. With the quartet, he performed in major concert halls across the globe and amassed a robust library of recordings. Colombian American pianist Dr. Andrés Jaramillo is our Leonard Stein Resident Artist for 2024/25. Dr. Jaramillo specializes in the performance of music by contemporary LatinX composers from Latin America and the US. Every composer on this program (including six world premieres and three 30 for 30 compositions) is or was an immigrant. Dr. Jaramillo explores, through these solo piano works, the myriad emotions, perspectives, and approaches inherent in the immigrant experience, intertwining the composers’ own cultural backgrounds with those of their new homes.

Award-winning, 22-year-old pianist and composer Talon Smith will perform his newly published masterpiece, “Sonata in C minor, Op. 2” for solo piano, showcasing his unique voice, mastery of the piano, and ability to evoke emotion through music. Talon will also perform two of Chopin’s greatest masterworks—Polonaise-Fantaisie and Ballade in F minor. He will then take us on a vivid musical journey through Mussorgsky’s epic magnum opus, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Two works on this program, both critically panned at their premieres, have since become audience favorites. Shostakovich’s Sixth starts with an achingly emotional slow movement before plunging toward a fast and fiery finish. In Tchaikovsky's lively Violin Concerto, the virtuosic demands made on the soloist never fail to leave audiences awestruck. The David Hockney-inspired opening work is performed in memory of composer, pianist, and former Colburn faculty member Sarah Gibson.

WEINBERG Concertino for Violin and String Orchestra WEINBERG Flute Concerto No. 1 WEINBERG Chamber Symphony No. 1
Despite being a friend and contemporary of Shostakovich, the musical genius of Mieczysław Weinberg went unrecognized for much of the 20th century due to Soviet-Era suppression. This concert highlights three of Weinberg’s more than 150 works: a playful flute concerto, a concertino for violin and string orchestra, and a dramatic chamber symphony. The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices is made possible through the generous support of Marilyn Ziering alongside the many donors who are inspired by this incredibly important work at Colburn School.
Under the batons of Salonen Fellows Mert Yalniz and Aleksandra Melaniuk, soloists from the Conservatory perform concerto movements with the Colburn Orchestra.
