Youth Dance Auditions & Placement

The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offers placement classes for new students for our ballet, modern, tap, hip hop, and jazz class offerings in the Youth Dance Program throughout the year. No placement class is required for any of our Beginning Dance classes.

Auditions are required for admission to our Dance Academy Program and are available year-round if space permits. Please contact Colburn’s Dance Office at dance@colburnschool.edu or call (213) 621-4530 to schedule an in-person audition or register through Dance Apply to submit a video audition.

Please include the following
Barre – the following combinations to one side:
  • Plié
  • Tendu
  • Rond de Jambe
  • Adagio
  • Grand Battement
  • Center floor work
Women must include the following, performed en pointe:
  • Adagio
  • Échappé
  • Relevé in arabesque
  • Diagonal turning combination
  • Petit allegro
  • Grand allegro
Men must include the following:
  • Adagio
  • Pirouettes both en dehors and en dedans
  • Diagonal turning combination
  • Petit allegro
  • Grand allegro
  • Double tour en l’air (may be part of grand allegro)
  • À la seconde turns
  • Video Audition Dress Code:
  • Women: black leotard, pink or skin tone tights, pointe shoes
  • Men: black tights and white t-shirt

The Modern Dance Program is designed to develop a young dancer’s artistry and skill. All interested modern dance students are required to do a placement class.

Classes in tap provide the opportunity for new and experienced dancers to develop their tap technique in a rigorous training program. All tap students are required to audition for proper placement.

All interested tap dance students are required to attend a placement class.

Our Hip Hop technique courses for students aged 7 to 18 explore the core elements of Hip Hop dance practice. Hip Hop can be taken as a single course or as an elective for students registered in ballet, modern, and dance classes. Courses require a year-long commitment. Ages are approximate guidelines.
