Musical Theatre
Auditions will take place on Sunday, August 16 from 3 pm-6 pm. Submit an inquiry today to sign up!
The Community School’s Musical Theatre program is designed for students ages 14–18 who possess a passion for the “triple threat” art form. Our curriculum helps aspiring musical theatre artists deepen their skills in voice, dance, and acting, while providing the training necessary to seamlessly transition between all three disciplines.
Meeting on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm, the High School Musical Theatre Workshop gives students a competitive edge in an ever-growing field and prepares them for college auditions. This class has two performances in Zipper Hall during the year.
Weekly Schedule & Curriculum
- Comprehensive Dance Class: A rotating curriculum throughout the year covering jazz, modern, hip-hop, and ballet.
- Tap Intensive: A dedicated 45-minute tap class each week.
- Performance & Technique Session: A two-hour session focusing on ensemble vocal repertoire, acting, and choreography. Students are instructed on how to connect detailed acting techniques directly to song and dance.
Acting the Song, 5:30pm-7pm is required for Musical Theatre Workshop students who would like to be considered for a solo in any performance.
Audition Requirements
Auditions will take place on Sunday, August 16 starting at 3pm at the Colburn School Studio B. Please email Denise Scheerer at dscheerer@colburnschool.edu in order to schedule an audition.
Auditions for the High School Musical Theatre Workshop is comprised of three components: voice, acting, and dance. A successful audition is based on the applicant’s performance in all three components. Please review the audition requirements for each component below.
Voice: Two songs in contrasting styles memorized and sung in their entirety, no cuts. Please bring sheet music in your key for the accompanist. No at-sight transpositions.
Acting: One memorized 90 second contemporary monologue, not from a musical. The character should be no older than 25. If you have a second monologue, bring it just in case.
Again. Monologue must be memorized. Focus on the truth and life of the piece, not on the results, tempos, how you sound or on “seeming natural.” Instead, live it out truthfully. Work from your own personal sense of truth, and from your own heart and passion.
Dance: Group dance warm up with a short dance combination learned in class. Afterwards, breaking into small groups.
Students who are interested in joining the High School Musical Theatre Workshop should submit an inquiry or contact Denise Scheerer at dscheerer@colburnschool.edu.

For singers ages 13 and up who are of an intermediate performance level or better. The class is NOT designed for beginning voice students.
We will concentrate on ways to simultaneously and seamlessly use both Acting and Singing Technique in song preparation and performance. How can you remain true to both? Learn how to sing a song that surprises you every time. Go beyond the constraints of your current skill sets, and find freedom within the structure of notes, rhythms, rhyme, and intention! Students from this class would be able to audition for performances with the High School Musical Theatre Workshop.
Be prepared to take risks and experiment with new ideas.
