The Colburn Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of the Conservatory of Music, brings together today’s most accomplished young musicians from around the world for performances of remarkable power and precision. This “United Nations of music” converges in Zipper Hall for performances featuring masterpieces by three of classical music’s founding fathers—Bach, Haydn, and Mozart—and spotlighting the next generation of virtuoso soloists. This package also features an orchestral program by the RVC Ensemble (Recovered Voices at Colburn Ensemble), a group dedicated to reviving the works of composers whose music was suppressed under the Nazi regime. Led by renowned conductor James Conlon, the RVC Ensemble brings to life works that were nearly silenced by history.

Alexandre Dossin brings passion and authority to the music of George Walker, the first African American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Raptures and storms, ecstasy and despair, the Romantic era of music captures human emotion like no other. This collection of concerts showcases composers at the height of their creative powers, offering works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. The series features Schumann’s Fairy Tale Pictures; Brahms’s radiant String Quintet No. 1; Elgar’s blazing, expansive Piano Quintet, composed in 1918 in the shadow of World War I; and a work for orchestra by Dvorak, who drew on his Czech nationalism and the folk music of Moravia and Bohemia to create music of profound emotional weight.
