Library Learning Lab: Inspiring Young Minds

Led by trombonist and educator Callan Milani (Conservatory ’11), this 3-part presentation will take participants through the entire process of creating content for an educational and entertaining musical program for young listeners, including the performance of a Symphony for Schools concert with the LA Phil where participants will see the concept and development come together.  

Session 1: 

Monday, March 24 at 6 pm
Colburn Library 

Free, RSVP required  

In this session, participants will learn how to:  

  • Create a story around a collection of musical works, using key questions, story mapping, messaging, and branding 
  • Develop content for instrumental music 
  • Work alongside collaborators, including pitching the project, editing content and scripts, and working with talent. 
  • Dinner provided from Sonoratown at 5:30 pm. RSVP to Debbie Smith at dsmith@colburnschool.edu by March 19 to attend dinner.   

Session 2:  

Tuesday, March 25 at 10 am or Wednesday, March 26 at 10 am
Walt Disney Concert Hall 

In this session, participants will attend “Harmony and Structure: An Introduction to the String Family,” a Symphony for Schools concert with members of the LA Philharmonic 

Session 3:  

Thursday, March 27 at 6 pm
Colburn Library  

In this final session, participants will: 

  • Discuss the concert experience and the “what comes next” for subsequent programs and   adaptations. 
  • Ask questions about the process, the project, and entrepreneurship. 
  • Pizza dinner provided at 5:30 pm. RSVP to Debbie Smith at dsmith@colburnschool.edu by March 19 to attend dinner.
