Architects design for the human experience. When an architectural space is filled with live performance, the artistry of the experience is palpable. Musicians and dancers are regularly adapting—from moment to moment—to their space. Sound waves are adjusted for, sight lines considered, obstacles choreographed around. In this series, we will study how the nature of space affects the experience of the artists and the audience.
This year’s Space & Sound programs will include Colburn artists performing live in remarkable architectural spaces, joined by industry experts and special guests in a lively and educational conversation with attendees.
Ingwald “Ingo” Preminger House, Brentwood (Location details will be sent to ticket holders)
Join us for an afternoon at the historic Ingwald “Ingo” Preminger House, a stunning example of Early American Colonial Revival architecture. Featuring a sophisticated garden paradise designed by Paul Revere Williams, this residence has undergone an extensive renovation under the direction of its current owner, Merle Mullin, bringing the glory of its initial concept back to the future with all the modern amenities to complement living in the 21st century.
Paul Revere Williams, FAIA, was a trailblazing African American architect who helped shape Los Angeles. Most of the buildings he designed were in Southern California and included the homes of numerous celebrities, such as Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck, and Charles Correll. He was a pioneer and was the first Black architect to become a member of the American Institute of Architects in 1923, and in 1957, he was inducted as the AIA’s first Black fellow.
