(Thursday, August 16, 2023) Los Angeles—The Colburn School, recognized nationwide for its excellence in music and dance education, today unveiled its 2023-24 season, which showcases the exceptional talent of the School’s students and faculty alongside renowned guest artists, presenting a diverse array of free and low-cost programs on campus and throughout Los Angeles.This season is particularly special as Colburn School commemorates significant anniversaries. The Conservatory of Music will be commemorating its 20th year, highlighting two decades of nurturing and developing the next generation of talented musicians. Additionally, Zipper Hall, the esteemed performance space, will be celebrating a remarkable 25 years, having served as a platform for countless extraordinary musical performances. These anniversaries serve as testament to the enduring impact and legacy of the Colburn School’s commitment to excellence in the arts.Colburn School will also be joining the 95 organizations participating in the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, a two-week state-wide music initiative showcasing the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years. Colburn School’s California Festival programs include:

  • The Colburn Orchestra returns to The Soroya, led by San Francisco Symphony Music Director and Head of Colburn School’s Negaunee Conducting Program, Esa-Pekka Salonen, to perform a program of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, with soloist Benett Tsai, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, and Elizabeth Ogonek’s Moondog.   • Jennifer Grim, Mozart Orchestra of New York principal flute and member of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds, joins Conservatory of Music students for an all-contemporary program of woodwind chamber works by Saariaho, Lei Liang, David Sanford, Asha Srinivasan, Allison Loggins-Hull and Reen Esmail.   • Colburn’s School’s Contemporary Ensemble performs works by Samuel Carl Adams, John Cage, Paul Hindemith, Magnus Lindberg, and Missy Mazzoli. (November 16, 2023)
  • Emmy Award-winning composer Kris Bowers presents a program of his own compositions including chamber arrangements of his famous scores. (November 19, 2023)

Signature programs will also return for the 2023-24 season, including Colburn Orchestra performances throughout Los Angeles, and the Colburn Chamber Music Society series welcoming distinguished artists from around the world to the School’s campus. Also returning is Amplify, which celebrates the careers of artists of color with week-long residencies, and Recovered Voices, which encourages greater awareness and more frequent performances of music by composers whose careers and lives were disrupted or ended during the years of the Nazi regime in Europe.

Amplify Artists include composer Kris Bowers and dancer and choreographer Michael Montgomery. Distinguished guest conductors leading the Colburn Orchestra include winner of the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award Roderick Cox; San Francisco Symphony Music Director and Head of Colburn School’s Negaunee Conducting Program, Esa-Pekka Salonen; Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival Peter Oundjian; Founder and artistic director of baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire, Jeannette Sorrell; Artiste Associé of Opéra de Nice Lionel Bringuier; and San Francisco Symphony Salonen Fellow Elias Brown. The Colburn Orchestra season also features distinguished faculty member and Music Director of the Colburn Orchestra, Yehuda Gilad.Distinguished artists appearing on the Colburn Chamber Music Society series include pianist Orion Weiss, trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth, flutist Jennifer Grim, Richard D. Colburn Viola Chair Tatjana Masurenko, and violinist Arnaud Sussmann. Ashley Wheater, Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet, and Leslie Carothers, former Joffrey principal dancer and current Colburn faculty, will join Conservatory musicians for the annual “See the Music, Hear the Dance” event, as they discuss beloved ballets and illuminate the creative process.

  • Saturday, October 7, 2023: Roderick Cox, winner of the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, opens the season with a virtuosic performance of Brahms’ beloved violin concerto, played by the 2022 Conservatory Concerto Competition winner, Jason Moon. Following this romantic masterwork, the orchestra recounts the hero’s journey of love and battle in a programmatic tone poem by Strauss. At Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium.
  • Saturday, November 4, 2023: San Francisco Symphony Music Director and Head of Colburn School’s Negaunee Conducting Program, Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a program that pairs the frenzied energy felt in Shostakovich’s first cello concerto, featuring soloist Benett Tsai, with the dark and turbulent power of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. The program, which is a part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, also features Elizabeth Ogonek’s Moondog. At Northridge’s The Soraya.
  • Sunday, December 3, 2023: Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival Peter Oundjian conducts the orchestra and viola soloist Nicolas Garrigues in a program of Bartók’s Viola Concerto; Beethoven’s Egmont and Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 complete the program. At Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium.
  • Sunday, January 28, 2024: Colburn Orchestra Music Director Yehuda Gilad leads this vibrant program which opens with a colorful yet rarely-heard violin concerto, Karl Goldmark’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring soloist Ezra Shcolnik. That romantic spirit continues with Mahler’s weighty “Titan” Symphony, which takes listeners on an idyllic jaunt through nature before ending with an intense battle and ultimate victory.   • Saturday, March 2, 2024: Founder and artistic director of Apollo’s Fire Jeannette Sorrell leads the Colburn Orchestra and flute soloists Danielle Kim & Elvin Schlanger in this intimate concert of Baroque and Classical favorites centering around composer Domenico Cimarosa’s charming and operatic Concerto for Two Flutes. Rounding out the program are selections from Handel’s regal Water Music and Mozart’s solemn Symphony No. 40, one of only two he wrote in a minor key. At Zipper Hall.
  • Thursday, March 24, 2024: Lionel Bringuier, Artiste Associé of Opéra de Nice, conducts Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring soloist Bogang Hwang, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, in a program of grandeur fitting for Walt Disney Concert Hall. Esa-Pekka’s fast-paced Helix opens the program. At Walt Disney Concert Hall.
  • Saturday, April 27, 2024: Under the baton of San Francisco Symphony Salonen Fellow Elias Brown, soloists from the Conservatory perform concerto movements with the Colburn Orchestra.

Colburn Chamber Music SocietyThe Colburn Chamber Music Society (CCMS) series features renowned guest artists joined on stage by Conservatory of Music students and faculty for a set of intimate performances.

  • Sunday, September 24, 2023: A sought-after soloist with an affinity for chamber music, pianist Orion Weiss’ engaging and heartfelt performances have made him an audience favorite. He presents a 20th century-centered program of Poulenc, Turina, and Korngold, with a bit of Mozart included for additional flavor.
  • Sunday, October 22, 2023: One of today’s leading trumpet soloists, Ting Thing Helseth’s technical mastery and soulful playing make her a must-see performer. Her unique approach to programming is on full display in this concert of boisterous chamber works for brass, woodwinds, strings, and piano, from composers Philip Glass, Hindemith, Martinu, Böhme and Saint-Saëns.
  • Sunday, November 12, 2023: Jennifer Grim, Mozart Orchestra of New York principal flute and member of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds, is a dynamic soloist, chamber musician, and educator. Her all-contemporary program of woodwind chamber works by Saariaho, Lei Liang, David Sanford, Asha Srinivasan, Allison Loggins-Hull and Reen Esmail showcases the bright, expressive sounds of the ethereal flute. This concert is part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music.
  • Sunday, February 4, 2024: The expressive playing and engaging stage presence of Colburn viola faculty member Tatjana Masurenko has led her to become one of today’s leading performers and educators. Violists take the stage for this performance of works including Bowen’s Fantasie Quartet for Four Violas; Juon’s Divertimento for Clarinet and Two Violas; Turina’s Scène andalouse for Two Violins, Two Violas, Cello and Piano; Glinka’s Serenade on Themes from Donizetti’s Opera “Anna Bolena”; and Dale’s Introduction and Andante for Six Violas.
  • Sunday, April 14, 2024: Arnaud Sussmann is a violinist with a unique sound and a strong passion for chamber music. An in-demand soloist and regular fixture in chamber festivals across the country, he takes the Colburn stage for a program blending classic and contemporary, featuring Haydn, Krása, Andrew Norman and Dohnányi.

  • Sunday, November 19, 2023: Emmy Award winner Kris Bowers has scored some of the most popular films and television series this decade, including the Netflix hit Bridgerton and the Academy Award-winning films King Richard and Green Book. He presents a program of his own compositions including chamber arrangements of his famous scores. This concert is part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music.
  • Wednesday, January 17, 2024: Dancer and choreographer Michael Montgomery leads a free masterclass as part of his Amplify residency. This season he also choreographs a new ballet for Dance Academy students to be performed at Counterpointe on March 23 and repeated at the Spring Dance Festival on June 1. Named on the list of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine, Montgomery has been a dancer with LINES Ballet since 2010.

Recovered VoicesThe Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices at Colburn brings to life important repertory by composers whose careers and lives were disrupted and destroyed during the years of the Nazi regime in Europe.

  • Saturday, October 28, 2023, Recovered Voices: Exiles in Hollywood Conservatory of Music violinist Adam Millstein and Colburn piano faculty Dominic Cheli perform the work of composers exiled by the Nazis and discuss how that suppression shaped the sound of film music.   • Sunday, December 10, 2023, Recovered Voices: Shostakovich & Weinberg: A Journey toward HopeIn response to the sold-out performance of the Shostakovich and Weinberg piano trios last season, this recital pairs the composers’ intimately connected piano quintets. Shostakovich would have written his quintet in 1940 shortly before meeting Weinberg for the first time. Fleeing the invading German forces in 1941, Weinberg made his way to Uzbekistan eventually meeting Shostakovich. After this meeting, Weinberg stated: “It was as if I had been born anew…Although I took no lessons from him (Shostakovich) he was the first person to whom I would show each of my new works.” Weinberg’s Quintet shows his musical admiration of the older Shostakovich, while still retaining his own steely personality throughout.   • Friday, March 15, 2024, Recovered Voices: Music of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Walter Arlen; Pre-concert talk featuring James Conlon, Harvey Sachs, and Diana Castelnuovo-TedescoDedicated to émigré, composer, and long-time Los Angeles resident Walter Arlen, this program features premieres of works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Walter Arlen, who both fled fascism and artistic repression in Europe and made their home in Los Angeles. In a pre-concert talk beginning at 5:30 pm, special guests discuss the life-defining challenges European artists faced in the 1930’s and 40’s and what must be done today to keep their work alive.The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices is made possible through the generous leading support of Marilyn Ziering alongside the many donors who are inspired by this incredibly important work at the Colburn School.

  • Flower: Community Film Screening and Panel Discussionwith Producers Misty Copeland and Leyla FayyazMonday, October 2, 2023Flower is an immersive experience in movement and storytelling that highlights intergenerational equity in the community of Oakland, California and demonstrates how dance can be used as a powerful tool to provoke social change. A panel discussion with producers Misty Copeland and Leyla Fayyaz follows the screening. Tickets are free; ticket reservations are required and will open in the fall.
  • See the Music, Hear the DanceSaturday, October 28, 2023Leading guest dance artists collaborate with Conservatory musicians in an evening that illuminates the creative process. Joined by guest artists from the Joffrey Ballet dancing iconic works from their repertoire, Ashley Wheater, Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet, and Leslie Carothers, former Joffrey principal dancer and current Colburn faculty, will discuss beloved ballets.

  • Colburn Baroque EnsembleArmy of GeneralsWednesday, November 8, 2023The phrase ‘army of generals’ was used by the eighteenth-century author Charles Burney to describe the splendid court orchestra at Mannheim, Germany, an orchestra coveted by Mozart. The Baroque Ensemble will perform galant orchestral music that was originally performed (or might have been performed) by this famous ensemble. The program will include music by Stamitz and Richter, and will conclude with Haydn’s beloved ‘Farewell’ Symphony.

Each year, more than 2,000 students from around the world come to Colburn to benefit from the renowned faculty, exceptional facilities, and focus on excellence that unites the community.The Colburn Center, designed by Frank Gehry, is a multi-faceted campus expansion expected to break ground in late 2023 and to open in the fall of 2026. Located across the street from the School’s existing campus at the intersection of Olive and Second Streets, the Colburn Center will enable the School to expand its mission of presenting programs for the public.
