Distinguished guest conductor Dinis Sousa leads a program of brilliance and transformation, marking Huang Ruo’s LACO debut with The Tipping Point, a powerful reflection on the beauty and fragility of nature. The extraordinary Isabelle Faust, one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, brings rare artistry to Schumann’s deeply moving Violin Concerto, a monumental highlight for LACO. The evening closes with Mendelssohn’s radiant Symphony No. 4, the “Italian”—a triumphant finale to an unmissable event.

Dance and Music Academy students perform celebrated choreography paired with musical masterworks. In addition to Everflow by OC Dance Project’s Ally Helman and the screening of a new dance film by Trudl Zipper Dance Institute Artistic Director Janie Taylor, the program will feature Dance Academy artists' original works, which showcase the improvisation and composition skills essential for a professional career in dance. Music selections include the Interstellar main theme by Hans Zimmer, Haydn and Mendelssohn string quartets, Philip Glass's Distant Figure, and more. This performance is generously supported by Koni and Geoff Rich.

Hear works by William Grant Still, José White, Jessie Montgomery, Manuel Ponce, and Quenton Blache, alongside Prokofiev’s dramatic “Stalingrad” Sonata and William Grant Still's Suite for Violin or Cello, performed by celebrated violinist Randall Goosby. From stirring melodies to bold new sounds, this concert is a moving journey through conflict, perseverance, and the pursuit of peace.

Join us for an evening of artistry and inspiration as Colburn's faculty perform music by living composers in the spectacular setting of Grand Rehearsal Hall. Featured composers include Valerie Coleman, Bryce Dessner, Vera Ivanova, Franz Doppler, Guillaume Connesson, and Eric Ewazen.

Following last season’s powerful performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, the Colburn Orchestra and conductor Earl Lee return to Walt Disney Concert Hall with another larger-than-life program. Two atmospheric works—Samy Moussa’s 2021 work Elysium and Richard Strauss’s famous symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra, best known for its use in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey—bookend the concert with soaring melodies and theatrical tone shifts. In between, the lush orchestration and sparkling virtuosity of Max Bruch’s violin concerto provide a break from the musical theatrics.

After a fiery overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, this concert centers on two of classical music’s greatest voices. While at its core an elegant and charming Classical-era composition, Beethoven’s second piano concerto includes delightful and innovative surprises that harken to his later Romantic roots. Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, on the other hand, is Romantic through and through. This orchestral masterwork is teeming with achingly beautiful melodies, luscious orchestral colors, and vivid emotions.

Experience the talent and charm of MacArthur Genius Grant-winning pianist Jeremy Denk as he leads a dynamic exploration of Beethoven’s last sonata, written after he had become completely deaf. Part performance and part discussion, this engaging examination of Piano Sonata No. 32 will delve into work’s boundary-pushing orchestration, innovative musical structure, and vivid emotions.

As part of Earth Week, Caltech and the Colburn School will co-host In Nomine Terra Calens: A musical and scientific reflection on the warming Earth. It will weave scientific insight and live performance into a shared exploration of the climate crisis.

Talented ensembles and soloists from the Conservatory of Music present programs of beloved classical works. 

MacArthur Genius Grant-winning pianist Jeremy Denk joins Colburn faculty and students in this program of electric quintets. Opening the concert is Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds, a work that masterfully balances the piano against oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon. Edward Elgar’s Piano Quintet starts on an eerie tone before modulating towards a brighter, more symphonic end. In between these masterworks is Valerie Coleman’s Tzigane, which was inspired by Ravel’s similarly named Hungarian rhapsody for violin. This performance will be livestreamed.

Musical Director Liz Kinnon leads Colburn's Adult Jazz Workshops in a mix of swing, blues, be-bop, and Latin-flavored tunes. Repertoire includes standards by such icons as Vince Guaraldi, Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and others.
