Musical Director Liz Kinnon leads Colburn's Adult Jazz Workshops in a mix of swing, blues, be-bop, and Latin-flavored tunes. Repertoire includes standards by such icons as Vince Guaraldi, Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and others.

His artistry guides a captivating program: Schumann’s reflective Violin Sonata No. 1; Mozart’s sparkling and witty Piano Quartet in E-flat major; and Beethoven’s richly textured Septet in E-flat major. Under the refined leadership of LACO’s Director of Chamber Music Margaret Batjer, this is chamber music at its most eloquent and expressive.
The Piano Spheres “30 for 30” anniversary commissioning celebration continues with premieres of new works by Brandon Rolle, Michael Frazier, and Zanaida Robles, matched with two monumental pieces from the middle of the 20th century: Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7, and Grażyna Bacewicz’s Piano Sonata No. 2.

Pacific Northwest Ballet School’s Summer Course is a five-week summer intensive for intermediate and advanced students, 12 to 19 years old who are at a stage of technical advancement proportionate to their age and who have the physical qualifications suited to the demands of classical dance. Twelve-year-olds must already be training on pointe by the time of their summer intensive audition.

Under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colburn's Maestro Ernst H. Katz Chair of Conducting Studies, the Colburn Orchestra brings to life Bruckner’s sweeping "Romantic" Symphony: a vivid narrative of medieval knights, the enchantment of nature, and the thrilling drama of forest hunts. Joining Esa-Pekka on the program are Salonen Conducting Fellows Aleksandra Melaniuk and Mert Yalniz, with Yalniz conducting the world premiere of his own orchestral composition. Lizst’s bold and playful symphonic poem Les Préludes opens the concert.

This colorful program highlighting a variety of music styles features the work of two influential French composers. César Franck’s expressive and fiery piano quintet will be performed alongside Claude Debussy’s only string quartet, an avant-garde tapestry of textures. Special guest Blake Pouliot joins Colburn students for both works. Rounding out the program is a fugal masterwork by Mozart showcasing the bass and an innovative contemporary work by Tōru Takemitsu that blends Eastern and Western sounds.

This Valentine’s weekend, celebrate music born of joy and devotion. Critically acclaimed composer Michael Abels unveils the world premiere of Meraki, a work inspired by doing something with joy and the love artists bring to their craft, created with passion and care. Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande shimmers with longing and delicate intimacy, a portrait of love’s tender complexities. The evening crescendos with the rare artistry of Fazıl Say, also a celebrated composer, stepping into the spotlight as pianist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 — a masterpiece of drama, intensity, and brilliance.
This intimate concert by award-winning pianist Paul Lewis features a series of Mozart and Poulenc pairings. The first half of this charming program includes Mozart’s energetic 10th piano sonata as well as excerpts from Poulenc’s Improvisations, a series of 15 short and diverse solo piano tunes. After intermission, Lewis performs the remaining Improvisations before concluding with Mozart’s turbulent Piano Sonata No. 14. L’isle Joyeuse (“Joyous Island”) by Claude Debussy divides the Mozart/Poulenc double feature.

Tesserae Baroque presents the Los Angeles premiere of Meera Kahe, a new cantata by Reena Esmail, featuring baroque violin, baroque flute, baroque cello, harpsichord, tabla, and Hindustani vocalist Saili Oak. Last season, the Eaton Fire made it impossible for us to prepare the full work, but now we’re back and ready to share Meera Kahe in its entirety!
